MATERIAL
titantwist - 10 times more elastic than conventional spring steel and so the material of the future!
The superelastic titanium alloy has a shape memory effect which means that components which have been subjected to a pronounced and permanent deformation „remember“ their original shape and return directly to their original geometry on heating. This superelasticity is made possible by a so-called temperature-dependent phase transformation. The material is set to behave superelastically at ambient temperatures between 15°C and +30°C. The quality of this effect is not lost over time, but is always maintained.
MANUFACTURATING PROCESS
The special titanium alloy is melted by electron beams under high vacuum. As part of heat and cold transformation, sheets, tubes and the wire preferred for further processing are produced from the ingot.
The wire is then subjected to a strictly controlled thermo-mechanical treatment to achieve the maximum elastic expansion in the desired temperature range.
APPLICATIONS
The titanium alloy used for spectacle frames fi rst acquired signifi cance in aerospace technology; it was then later used as a mechanical control member and fi nally, due to its good biocompatibility, in medical engineering applications. One good example for this is the use in orthodontic braces where a constant tension over a wide expansion range is an absolute necessity. As used today, the resistance to kinking, the ability to control the process and the extreme ductility offer unique possibilities for revolutionary frame designs.
QUALITY
Titantwist frames satisfy and even surpass the requirements of EEC Directives 93/42 for medical products and so bear the CE mark.
Note:
titantwist frames are extremely fl exible. However, they will not withstand deliberate attempts at destruction in every case and should not be bent by more than 45°.
